Our History

Early days

For many years, skiing had a reputation for being a dangerous sport that attracted athletes with an adventurous spirit. In the early 1970s, a handful of international researchers made a concerted effort to reduce the incidence of skiing injuries. Their effort resulted in the formation of the International Society for Snowsports Safety (ISSS).

Founder Ejnar Eriksson, M.D.

The ISSS was founded by Ejnar Eriksson, MD, of Stockholm, Sweden. After the first World Congress on Skiing Trauma and Safety that occurred in Riksgränsen, Sweden, in 1974, the ISSS was organized. The first official ISSS congress was held three years later in 1977 in the Sierra Nevada of Spain.

ISSS Contributions

ISSS members have a long history of involvement in advances in equipment design. These include releasable alpine ski bindings, helmets, snowboarding wrist guards and the design of terrain park features.
